Below you will find a list of equipment needs along with cost estimates. Prices vary considerably based on brands and product sophistication. For example, a price of foam ear plugs is cheap compared to electronic noise-cancelling ear muffs. Prices vary somewhat based on retailer. The cost estimates below are for mid-range products.
These items can be purchased from retailers like Scheels, Sportsman's Warehouse, Mills Fleet Farm, Bass Pro, Midway USA, Rogers Sporting Goods, etc. Buying items online frequently offers the best prices, but we suggest supporting local businesses whenever possible. In particular, Scheels at Jordan Creek Mall has consistently delivered positive experiences for our members, and they are a support of youth shooting sports in general.
The Club has a limited number of DCHS Trap logo shooting vests, ear muffs and shell pouches (holds ammo box only) for temporary member use. Athletes are expected to purchase and maintain their own equipment - the club loans spares for emergency situations only.
Required Equipment
Eye protection: $5 - $15
Ear protection: $5 - $15 (ear plugs) OR $25 - $50 (ear muffs)
The club will provide basic hearing protection if you do not have it.
12-gauge or 20-gauge shotgun. See Shotgun Selection and Fit page for exceptions and things to consider when purchasing a shotgun.
Gun case: $20 - $50 (Soft or Hard)
Shell pouch: $20 - $30
Shell pouches are available to hold your ammo box only or your ammo box plus empty shells.
Shell catcher: $10 - $25
A shell catcher stops your empty shells from hitting the ground. A properly placed rubber band can achieve this as well.
Gun cleaning/care supplies: $15 - $30
Optional equipment
Trap Station Gun Rest (ground pad to rest gun muzzle while not shooting): $15 - $20
WARNING: a toepad or boot is NOT a trap station gun rest. Toepad use is forbidden. The barrel should never be pointed at any part of the human body.
Shooting vest: $50
Shooting vests provide added padding where the butt of the gun goes. Most vests also include mesh pockets to hold empty shells. Athletes are asked to wear a DCHS logo vest and/or DCHS colors for competitions. A limited supply of club-owned vests are available for purchase, or an athlete may purchase their own vest and have the DCHS Trap logo embroidered on it by an approved vendor.
