ALWAYS Keep The Gun Pointed In A Safe Direction - This is the primary rule of gun safety. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.
ALWAYS Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Ready To Shoot - When holding a gun, rest your finger alongside the frame and outside the trigger guard. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.
ALWAYS Keep The Gun Unloaded Until Ready To Use - If you do not know how to open the action or inspect the chamber(s), leave the gun alone and get help from someone who does.
While it is likely that no list can fully address every issue that may occur during the course of our season, the following are basic rules that must be adhered to at all times:
NEVER bring your firearm or ammunition onto school property at ANY time. State Law (and school policy) prohibits both items on school property. They can't even be locked in the trunk of your car.
NEVER point your firearm in the direction of anything you do not intend to destroy, even if it is unloaded. (Yes, this is in the fundamental rules above, but it can't be repeated enough.)
There is an indicator on the Trap House that means someone is inside. Do NOT point your firearm in the direction of the trap house if it shows someone is inside. If someone is in the Trap House, you should return your firearm to the rack.
Do not handle your firearm until it is time to walk to the trap station to shoot.
Carry your firearm with both hands and the muzzle pointed skyward. Break action shotguns should be carried with the break open and the barrel(s) pointed towards the ground.
The firearm's safety must always be on until you are at the trap station and ready to shoot.
The firearm must remain unloaded until it is your turn to call for the clay pigeon.
Do NOT load your firearm with more than ONE shell when it is your turn at station.
The firearm's action must always be open until you are at station and ready to shoot the first round.
Once the gun has fired the hull must be ejected, the action must be kept open and the muzzle must be pointed in a safe direction.
No phones are allowed in front of the 27 yard line.
No food is allowed in front of the 27 yard line.
After shooting, athletes must wash hands before consuming food or beverages.
Use COLD water plus soap or D-Wipe Towels to remove potential lead.
If you have a malfunction or misfire, immediately stop what you are doing, loudly call "CEASE FIRE," keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction, and notify a coach or range official that you need assistance. Do NOT turn around at the shooting station while you have a loaded, malfunctioning firearm or shell. Help will come to you.
